Linguistic Patterns

An interesting and unexpected effect of the subjects’ confinement in the testing grounds is that they have developed their own vocabulary of slang. They have invented terms for a variety of things, including their location, buildings within the location, and they have also created new colloquial phrases. This evolution of language that has occurred is fairly interesting in the way it has come about. It is worth noting that many of these words are intended to be profanity. These words are often invented in response to the Variables. A team of observers have compiled these terms in the lexicon below, in order for behavior analysts to study the subjects more thoroughly. Please see the footage below the lexicon for examples of usage of some of these terms.

B

Banished- to be forced to spend a night in the Maze. Considered to be certain death.

Bark- a quiet, pesky, black labrador.

Beetle blade- robot with reptilian and insect features. One of our surveillance devices with WICKED written along it’s side.

Blood house- slaughter and farm house. Work place of the Slicers.

Box- mine elevator that we use to transport supplies and “Greenies” from a different location to the centre of the Glade.

Box Hole- elevator shaft of the “Box”

Brick hick- a construction worker, more commonly referred to as builders

C

the Changing- extremely painful process undergone by people stung by grievers and given the serum. Causes the recovery of some memories. See serum.

Cliff- the abyss at the end of the maze. Runners have explored all of the sections, and have discovered the only exit to be a cliff with no visible bottom.

Council- the ruling body of the glade, consisting of all the keepers and one head leader.

D

The Doors- massive slabs of concrete that close every night to keep the Grievers in the maze, but one night they don’t close and the Grievers come into the Glade.

The Ending- what the subjects have deduced to be the end or destruction of the Maze

First Day- the first day for a new “Glader”

G

a Gathering – when all the Keepers have a meeting to discuss important things in the Glade.

Glade- area at the center of the Maze. Surrounded by walls, with a Door on each wall.

Greenbean- name used for a newcomer to the Glade. Also referred to as Greenie, or Newbie

Grief Serum- an injection given to people that have been stung by a “Griever” that keeps them from dying. They then go through the Changing, during which some memories return. We supply this through the “Box”.

Grievers- mechanical creatures residing in the Maze. Nocturnal. Reside in the Griever Hole, a meter square anomaly off the Cliff.

Homestead – the place where the Gladers sleep at night and live.

Keeper – a Glader that has the role as a leader of all the people who do a certain job.

Klunk- rude word for feces, derived from the onomatopoeia

M

Map room – the place where the runners go after coming back to make maps of the Maze.

The Maze – surrounds the place where the Gladers live. Contains “Grievers”. Walls change every night.

Med-jacks- the Glade’s equivalent of doctors

N

Nap room- a room within the “homestead”, where a majority of the “Gladers” sleep

R

Runner- explore the Maze durning the day, drawing maps when they return to the Glade.

Runtcheeks- a less than pleasant name for the gluteus Maximus

S

Shank- a derogatory name

Shuck- a derogatory word, possibly the equivalent of the f word. (Can be used: “Shuck-face”, “Shuck it”, or as an adjective)

Slammer- the Glade’s prison

Slicer- tender of animals, also in charge of slaughtering them. Also called Blood Housers.

to Slim- to calm (used: “slim yourself nice and calm”)

Slinthead- derogatory name

Slopper- worker deals with waste

Stung- what happens when a “Griever” weapon touches human skin

Track-hoe- Glade equivalent of a farmer
